Community Needs Assessment

Over the past several years, VTL heard from our community that we should explore the need for a new Driggs branch library building. In 2023 we asked RATIO, an architecture firm specializing in libraries, to help gather community ideas about a potential new library space. Through public surveys, community outreach sessions, staff brainstorming meetings, and library leadership input, they helped develop a comprehensive community needs assessment for VTL. It’s informative, creative and fun! You can read the results here:

The RATIO inquiry had several key goals:
1. Help VTL identify and meet the needs of a 21st century library
2. Create design options for a new branch building
3. Develop an agreement plan to guide the next chapter of development for a new library branch building in Teton Valley

Overlay of site test fit sketches for a proposed library building over an aerial view of the lot on the corner of Main St and East Harper Ave in Driggs.
Word cloud showing what people envision in a 21st century library including words like comfortable niches, natural light, outdoor space, and warm and cozy.
Tennis court with surrounding fence, lawn, trees, stop sign
Architectural line drawing of a potential library reading room with shelves, study tables, windows and an elevated roofline.
Bubble schematic drawing of a potential one story library layout including areas for adult collections, childrens collections, study rooms, makerspace, a meeting room, outdoor space, staff area and entry hub.
A 2 story bubble schematic drawing of a potential library space with adult collections, study rooms and an outdoor patio on the upper floor and makerspace, meeting rooms, childrens area, staff work space and an entry hub on the main floor.
Architectural line drawing of a future library space featuring two-story glass walls providing an expansive view of the surrounding landscape, multi-level bookshelves, and seating areas with tables and chairs for reading and studying.

A special thank you to the 200+ people who have been involved in this process, especially to community members who love and support Valley of the Tetons Library. The people of Teton Valley provided the vision of a new library space that will meet essential community needs. That vision is encapsulated here. Enjoy!
