Literacy is Life

When I was young and I had a question (or a million)…my mother would always answer, ‘I’ll write it down and we will look it up at the library’. So week after week, I would work through my list: How do fish breathe underwater? Why do plants need sunlight? Why do zebras have stripes? How far away is the moon? My love of reading and learning is largely due to all the time I spent in the library… I hope to raise my daughter in the same way.Liana Hady, Victor ID

Collage of many types of literacy

Digital Literacy • Health Literacy • Financial Literacy • Media Literacy • Information Literacy

The power of literacy extends beyond just words. It’s answering the questions of life. How we live, learn, earn and connect – that’s literacy. Read a prescription, identify misinformation, write a resume, budget a paycheck, vote informed – these are skills for life that require expanded literacy.

At Valley of the Tetons Library, we provide literacy for life through creative programs, expansive collections and resources available to all.

In just one day at the library we had a patron printing signage for their local business, another checking out a tool for a home maintenance project, several reading the newspaper and a Storytime program where toddlers and their caregivers connected with songs and stories that enhance early literacy. The library provides so many opportunities for people to improve their lives in small, daily ways. It’s incredible.VTL Librarian

Donations through VTL Foundation and Friends support all forms of literacy

During the Tin Cup Challenge June 13 – July 25, 2025 you can promote community literacy too. Your gift of any amount to Valley of the Tetons Library Foundation and Friends goes toward facilities, programs and collections of Valley of the Tetons Library. Thanks to a partial match from business and individual challengers through the Community Foundation of Teton Valley, that donation goes further.

My favorite thing about the library is that people can read and they get to learn new things about the library…The library has helped me learn and read better because I used to not know how to read and a teacher teached me how to read so [now] I like reading as well as a lot of other people.Jacky, age 9

Giving to VTL Foundation and Friends through the Tin Cup Challenge directly supports life-long learning right here in Teton Valley. Improve digital, health, financial, media and information literacy in our community among your neighbors and friends.
