The 1000 Books Foundation encourages early literacy acquisition by challenging parents of kids age 0-5 to read 1000 books with their child before their child starts formal schooling. Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read. Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is simple. Read books with your child, with the goal of reading 1,000 before kindergarten.

The Idaho Teen Reading Challenge is a chance for school and public libraries to challenge teens to read books outside of their comfort zone. Here’s how it works:
During the months of October – April, teens are challenged to read 8 books from the following 10 categories:
-
- New Genre: try a new genre.
- Sports Book: read a book about or featuring a sport.
- Memoir/Biography: read a book by or about a real person.
- Same Book as a Friend: read the same books as one of your friends.
- Setting You Want to Visit: read a book set somewhere you want to visit.
- Mystery: read a book with a mystery.
- 1-Star Review: read a book with a 1-star review. Even the best books get 1-star reviews from someone.
- Look to the Future: read a book that makes you think about the future.

- Free Choice: read whatever you want!
