  • Two-Word Title
  • New Format – like an audio book or graphic novel
  • Library Display – digital displays count!
  • Multicolored Cover
  • Science Fiction
  • Recommended by a Teacher
  • Features the Outdoors
  • Read Before You Stream – a book that was made into a movie or will be!
  • Poetry or a Novel in Verse.
  • Free Choice: read whatever you want!

Pick up a reading log at any VTL Branch. Once your reading log is complete return it to any VTL Branch. ALL books read will be counted – a teen doesn’t have to finish the entire challenge to participate, and all reading will be recognized.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The 1000 Books Foundation encourages early literacy acquisition by challenging parents of kids age 0-5 to read 1000 books with their child before their child starts formal schooling. Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read.  Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success.  The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is simple. Read books with your child, with the goal of reading 1,000 before kindergarten.

Visit any VTL Branch to sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten or download instructions and reading logs for yourself here.

About the Revolutionary Spuddy Buddies

Created by Julie A. Ellsworth, Idaho’s State Treasurer and a member of the America250 in Idaho Advisory Council, the Revolutionary Spuds transform the beloved Spuddy Buddy mascot from the Idaho Potato Commission into patriotic characters inspired by America’s Revolutionary era. What began as a creative solution for a Paul Revere commemorative event quickly grew into a statewide initiative that celebrates the founding of our nation in a uniquely Idaho way. Ellsworth personally designed, crafted, and costumed each character, giving every Spuddy Buddy a historical identity and personality.
