Coding for Kids and Parents

Here you will find a number of awesome resources for introducing kids (or kids at heart) to the basic concepts of coding and computer science. Most of these resources use code blocks that can be dragged and dropped into place, instead of classic text-based programming languages. This allows you to focus on learning the fundamentals of coding without having to worry about spelling, formatting and syntax. The following list of links will be arranged roughly by difficulty. Many of these resources can be used by very young kids, but help from a parent or mentor is strongly encouraged.

Making Games, Animations and Art…

Scratch – The best place to start for brand-new coders.

Snap! – Great for those who know Scratch and are ready for more depth.

Beetle Blocks – Best for coders who like art and visual design.

Making Phone Apps…

Stencyl – This software is full of features that help you make amazing, even professional games for your phone.

The world of Programming Languages…

A Beginners Guide – There are a lot of computer languages out there, and each one with pros and cons. Once you’re comfortable with blocks, this is a great place to start learning about what programming languages are and how to decide which are going to be most useful for your interests and goals.

First-Time JavaScript…

LearnToMod – This is a modding-for-Minecraft resource that is very fun and full of opportunities.

Code Combat – This puzzle game will help you play your way to coding JavaScript.
